“A Quinta”

A wooded spot with 5000 m2, with three buildings of typical rural architecture, dominated by the enormous chimneys in stonework stone in the form of “hands put” and the borders and contours of doors and windows also in stone. History

Belonging to a wealthy rural family, the “Quinta” has been a multi-purpose venue for more than a century.

In addition to housing, it served as an economic center for self-support. The cultivation of corn, its transformation into flour and into bread, in their wood stoves; milk production; their skimming and processing into cheese and butter; the production of grapes and their transformation into wine; the capture of rainwater and its storage in cisterns; the production of fruits, in particular of figs and their use, both fresh and sometimes dried in home-made jams; the production of poultry and eggs; the production of pigs, their slaughtering and storage of meat in earthenware containers (salgadeiras) and the production of an immense variety of horticultural and floricultural products, were the result of a hard work where the time between sunrise and sunset – Sun.

In addition to the practice of a self-subsistence economy, Quinta’s three buildings served as a commercial establishment (where some of the Lisbon newspapers were posted for information on the local population, especially at the time of the 1914 war); as a primary school; milk skimming station and even as a military barracks.

Today, it’s adapted to the practice of rural tourism-country house, and it keeps alive the signs of its history.

ACCOMMODATION

You will find all rooms to be generous in size and comforts. All furniture has been crafted from local wood (resinous pine, laural acacia) and is styled to compliment the character of the hotel. Bedspreads, quilts, rugs and small details such as table linens and lampshades have also been handmade by skilled artisans from the island of São Jorge. Oil paintings and quality prints of photographs taken of the island form years ago grace the walls. Rooms have either double or single beds, tv’s and telephones. All lodgings have a luxurious private bathroom.
