In addition to housing, it served as an economic center for self-support. The cultivation of corn, its transformation into flour and into bread, in their wood stoves; milk production; their skimming and processing into cheese and butter; the production of grapes and their transformation into wine; the capture of rainwater and its storage in cisterns; the production of fruits, in particular of figs and their use, both fresh and sometimes dried in home-made jams; the production of poultry and eggs; the production of pigs, their slaughtering and storage of meat in earthenware containers (salgadeiras) and the production of an immense variety of horticultural and floricultural products, were the result of a hard work where the time between sunrise and sunset – Sun.
In addition to the practice of a self-subsistence economy, Quinta’s three buildings served as a commercial establishment (where some of the Lisbon newspapers were posted for information on the local population, especially at the time of the 1914 war); as a primary school; milk skimming station and even as a military barracks.
Today, it’s adapted to the practice of rural tourism-country house, and it keeps alive the signs of its history.
